Millions of people around the globe joined in protests to ask "an end to the age of fossil fuels." From New York to Guatemala City, Sydney to Kabul, and Cape Town to London, protesters in hundreds of cities around the world took the streets, asking their governments take important steps to tackle the climate crisis and stop an environmental catastrophe. Thousands joined in marches in New York City, London, Berlin, Istanbul, Sydney, Mexico and more cities across the country. They carried banners with some displaying messages see on photos.
Climate activist Greta Thunberg participated in the protests in New York City, where 1.1 million students have been given permission to skip school to join. Children are fighting for their future. The time to act is now before its too late - people say.
"The preliminary numbers say there are at least 3 million people in #ClimateStrike
And that is before counting North and South America," tweet Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teen, who was in New York to lead the climate strike ahead of the UN Climate Action Summit, which is slated to bring together world leaders to discuss climate change mitigation strategies, including the move from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
This week will be historic. In over 161 countries, people are stepping up to support young climate strikers and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. The climate crisis won’t wait, so neither will we. Young people have woken up much of the world with their powerful Fridays For Future school strikes for the climate. Now, millions of adults are joining in a huge wave of that will kickstart renewed action all over the world. The urgency of the climate crisis requires a new approach and a just response centered on people rights, equity, and justice.
These Climate Strikes won’t solve the climate crisis alone. What this time can do is the action that people are no longer willing to continue with business as usual. The urgency of the climate crisis requires a new approach and a just response centered on people rights, equity, and justice. Greta Thunberg’s lone protest caught the world’s attention last year and has spread to millions of school children who are sounding the alarm. Now it’s everyone’s turn to stand with young people and show world leaders the people power ask climate justice. September’s climate strikes will kickstart a huge wave of action and renewed ambition all over the world.
Going on climate strike implies people everywhere stepping out of their homes, their offices, their farms, their factories. Everyone is needed to disrupt business as usual: from sports stars, actors and teachers to food industry workers, psychologists, delivery drivers and everything in between. We can all take part, whatever our circumstances, by refusing to accept the status quo. Already people in 160 countries are organizing for the global climate strikes this September. Everyone will spend the day in action raising awareness in their communities and pushing for solutions to the climate crisis that has justice and equity at their heart. On a grossly unequal planet, not everyone will be able to take a day or take part in the same way. But we can all take a stand and make our voices heard.
